Here is a link to the Goodreads page for the book to read a small synopsis, see categories, and see other reviews. I paired a mocktail with my reading experience, I have the details at the bottom if you are interested.
My Rating-4 out of 5 stars
Overall thoughts: The more I read of this book, the more I liked it better than the first. It just got better, crazier, and had me more and more on the edge of my seat waiting to see what happened next. I was actually crying a little towards the end and while it isn't like a life changing book it was really good! It flows really well like the first did but I like the story so much better the more it develops. I certainly was not expecting most of the ending and l am so pumped for the next book, I am not sure I want to wait for the paperback version. I am going to include my notes I made about things I liked, things I didn't, my overall thoughts, and the brief description I wrote in my own words that may be a little spoiler-y but I am trying to be as vague but interesting as possible. This book was about: Avery and the boys pick up where they left off and continue working on the new puzzle they discovered at the end of The Inheritance Games. There is a new threat looming at the beginning, Max surprises Avery, and there may even be more sparks between Avery and one of the boys then there was before (note that these are not spicy books and everything is fairly innocent which I like). We learn a lot more about what truly happened the night of the fire and who Avery's family really was along with where Toby fits into Avery's story. There is a reconciliation, some betrayal, and some interesting twists and turns. What I didn't like: what Alisa tells Avery at the end when she wakes up, stupid Thea and her fireplace trick, the interviewer was just rude and unnecessary, I hated that Libby and Avery were so different when it came to their dad and that Libby really didn't understand why Avery wouldn't give him a chance but wanted to be emancipated instead. What I did like: I loved how the story developed even further in this book and how Avery and the Hawthorne boys work together, I feel like there was some character development from the boys in this book as well, getting to see more of Max and Avery's friendship, Libby was so kind and helpful (even more so in this book) and we see her sacrificing to make sure Avery is safer, Libby stops standing up for Ricky. Has anyone else been reading this series? What are your thoughts?
The mocktail: A dark and stormy (a.k.a. a dark and spicy).

I wanted to make a dark and stormy (I felt like the original recipe gave me
Hawthorne/mysterious vibes and felt like it matched the cover of the book) and ended up
finding a recipe for it by Lyre's non alcoholic spirts but they call it a dark n' spicy so I wanted to use that. But when I was getting what I needed, I ended up finding a premixed mocktail by Lyre's so I got those instead. Here is the Lyre's dark n' spicy recipe. Eventually this will be it's own post with a food recipe included that I felt like matched the book but while I get my bearings on having a mocktail and eventually food recipe to match.
It was definitely spicy and really good, the taste was exactly what I was expecting/hoping for. I enjoyed the experience a lot more by having a drink I picked out to match bu it also was so nice to be able to select a mocktail so I can continue my sobriety so it really just elevated the experience.
